Generator Fuel Specialists

Your Generator Is Maintained. But What About Its Fuel?

Water and sludge can build up at the bottom of a generator's fuel tank for years without anyone noticing. Fueltration samples and cleans the stored fuel in condo and commercial generators, so you know it will hold up before the next outage.

The Hidden Risk

What's Sitting at the Bottom of Your Tank?

Standby diesel can sit for months or years between outages, and it doesn't stay clean. Condensation lets water in, bacteria and fungus grow where water collects, and the fuel slowly breaks down into sludge that settles on the tank floor.

A short test run often draws cleaner fuel from higher in the tank, so the generator passes. During a long outage, that bottom layer gets stirred up, clogs the filters and starves the engine of fuel. The generator shuts down just when your elevators, fire alarm, emergency lighting and pumps need it.

Glass jars showing diesel fuel samples at progressively higher levels of contamination, from clean amber to dark sludge.

The engine wasn't the problem. The fuel was.

Fuel vs. Engine

Generator Maintenance Isn't Fuel Maintenance

Many generator service companies maintain the engine and electrical systems but don't sample or clean the fuel. A generator can pass its service with contaminated fuel sitting underneath it, so this step often falls between vendors.

A fuel sample, drawn from the bottom of the tank where contaminants settle, checks for:

Water
Sludge and sediment
Bacterial or fungal growth

What the code says: The BC Fire Code requires emergency power systems to be maintained to CSA C282, which includes annual fuel quality checks. (Verify the applicable BC Fire Code and CSA C282 edition before publication.)

The Process

How Fueltration Helps

Our fuel management program starts with a yearly sample of your stored fuel. If we find water or sludge, we:

1

Remove it from the tank bottom.

We extract the water and sludge where they settle.

2

Clean the tank, not just the fuel.

Our purpose-built nozzles lift contamination off the floor and walls of the tank.

3

Polish the fuel to 1 micron.

Your fuel can then be reused instead of replaced.

All of this is done on site with mobile equipment, and your system stays online while we work.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should generator fuel be tested?
We recommend sampling at least once a year as part of annual maintenance. Your maintenance program or code consultant can confirm the schedule for your building.
Doesn't my generator service already cover the fuel?
Not always. Many service agreements cover the engine and electrical systems only. Check your agreement, or ask us.
What happens if you find water or sediment?
We'll explain what we found and quote the fix. That usually means removing water and sludge, cleaning the tank and filtering the fuel, all without shutting your system down.
Are there fuel requirements for generators in BC?
Yes. The BC Fire Code references CSA C282, which includes annual fuel quality checks. Requirements vary by building, so confirm specifics with your fire safety or code consultant.
What areas do you serve?
We serve Vancouver, the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.

Regulatory statements should be verified against the applicable BC Fire Code and CSA C282 edition before publication.
